This cycle of 36 drawings, headpieces, and tailpieces became a true masterpiece and the artist's finest book work. The drawings were done in ink and watercolor, imitating color woodcuts. The publication of "The Bronze Horseman" with Benois's illustrations became a landmark event in the history of publishing and book graphics. The first edition of the illustrations was created in 1903 in Rome and St. Petersburg; it was acquired by S.P. Diaghilev and published in the first issue of the magazine "World of Art" in 1904. In 1905, A. Benois, while in Versailles, reworked six of his previous illustrations and created the frontispiece for "The Bronze Horseman." In 1916, 1921-1922. The cycle was revised for the third time and supplemented with new drawings, and it was in this final form that it was published.
